
Healthier, Safer Tourism in Belize
The Ministries of Health and Tourism in Belize, alongside the Belize Tourism Board, have partnered with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), and the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) to implement the Tourism and Health Program (THP). This innovative initiative aims to enhance the health, safety, and quality of Belize’s tourism product while promoting the well-being of visitors and locals alike.
Objectives
- Reduce illness among tourists to increase visitor arrivals.
- Build a healthier, safer, and more environmentally friendly tourism industry for sustainability.
- Implement food and environmental safety training and certification.
- Provide timely alerts for health, environmental, and social events to support monitoring and rapid responses.
- Promote a healthy workforce and reduce avoidable health costs.
- Foster collaboration between tourism and health stakeholders to prioritize tourism and health initiatives.
- Develop partnerships to sustain tourism’s long-term viability.
Components
Regional Tourism and Health Information System
- Real-time web-based surveillance for early alerts and responses to health, safety, and environmental threats.
- Standardized protocols for managing illnesses in hotels, guesthouses, and cruise ships.
- Training and user manuals to enhance laboratory methods and response capabilities during outbreaks.
Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Standards and Certification
- Review and update regional and international HSE standards for tourism.
- Collaborate with standards organizations to establish recognized certification systems.
Food Safety and Environmental Sanitation Training and Certification
- Advanced training in food safety (HACCP) and environmental sanitation.
- Protocols for investigating, preventing, and controlling outbreaks.
- Pathogen-specific training to enhance safety measures.
