Enhancement of the tourism product

This component aims to diversify the tourism product and enhance tourism services and experiences (primarily for nature-based and cultural tourism) at the target destinations (Corozal, Caye Caulker, Mountain Pine Ridge/Caracol Area and Toledo). The overall goal is to increase visitor expenditures while improving social inclusion, environmental quality and climate resilience. Investments will include the enhancement of Archaeological Sites (subterranean sites and ancient cities); restoration and enhancement of culture based attractions within the urban centers of Corozal Town and Punta Gorda Town; improvement and development of natural attractions; enhancement of waterfronts and basic infrastructure in Caye Caulker, Corozal Bay and Punta Gorda.

Promoting disaster and climate resilient tourist destinations

This component aims to improve the destination capacity to manage the risk of natural disasters and adapt to climate change by reducing vulnerability, increasing resilience and strengthening environmental management of tourism activities focussing on the maintenance of ecosystem services and natural capital. The program will finance technical studies, and provide capacity building assistance in the form of training, manuals and plans, that will increase local knowledge and the tourism sector’s ability to respond and adapt to climate change and natural disasters.

Institutional strengthening and capacity building

This component is aimed at improving policy, planning and destination management of the tourism sector and increasing capacity of the private sector and LIPs (Low Income People) involved in tourism development and promotion. The program will procure goods, finance studies and offer technical assistance to improve tourism policy and legislation, specifically as it relates to tourism governance, climate change and sustainable practice; it will support improved destination planning and management including the collection of destination specific data and tourism statistics; as well as provide direct support to LIP and service providers within the excursion sector to participate competitively within the value chain.
